Overview
The 9th New York Independent Battery was an artillery unit organized in New York City for Union service during the American Civil War. Originally recruited as Company F of the 41st New York Infantry, it was mustered into United States service at Yorkville on June 6, 1861, for a three-year term. The battery served primarily in the defenses of Washington, D.C., and did not participate in any major engagements. It remained on garrison duty throughout its service.
This unit served exclusively in the Eastern Theater and was detached as an independent battery in November 1861. Its service is notable for its role in the capital’s defenses rather than battlefield action.
Organization & Service
The 9th New York Independent Battery was organized in New York City and mustered in on June 6, 1861, as Company F, 41st New York Infantry. The company left New York State for Washington, D.C., on July 8, 1861. On November 7, 1861, it was detached from the 41st New York Infantry and designated as the 9th Independent Battery, New York Light Artillery.
Throughout its service, the battery was assigned to the defenses of Washington, D.C., performing garrison duty. It did not take part in any field campaigns or battles. The battery remained at its post until the expiration of its term and was mustered out of service on June 13, 1864, under the command of Captain Emil Schubert.
